The Rottweiler (or Rottie) is considered to be one of the oldest surviving dog breeds. Its origin goes back to Roman times. These dogs were kept as herder or driving dogs. They marched over the Alps with the Roman legions, protecting the humans and driving their cattle. Later they were used to pull carts for butchers.  Rottweilers were among the earliest police and army dogs and are still used for this purpose today.  This active and intelligent breed needs lots of training, socialisation and exercise to be a happy and healthy pooch.  They are popular family guardians and friends.
