Killer Whale
Killer Whale
Killer whales (Orca) gained their common name because some types prey on other whales. They were once called "whale killers" by sailors who witnessed their attacks on larger cetaceans. Over time, the name was gradually switched to "killer whale". But did you know that they aren't actually whales....they are actually dolphins. The name Orca comes from their Latin species name Orcinus orca, where orcinus translates to mean ‘Kingdom of the dead’. They can be found in oceans all over the world. They are some of the most widely distributed mammals in the world, competing only with humans and rats.
